What is PCOS problem in females ? And how seriously one should take this ?
Dietitian Eti Speaks : Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or polycystic ovary disease (PCOD) is a problem in which a woman’s hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. Most women with PCOS grow many small cysts on their ovaries. That is why it is called PCOS.
If it isn’t treated, over time it can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease and even cancers! Most women with PCOS grow many small cysts on their ovaries. That is why it is called polycystic ovary syndrome. The cysts themselves are not harmful, but lead to hormone imbalances.
What are the problems your female clients face with PCOS?
Dietitian Eti Speaks : Common symptoms of PCOS include irregular or no menstrual periods, acne, obesity/weight gain/inability to lose weight, depression, oily skin, infertility, skin discolorations, high cholesterol levels, elevated blood pressure, excess or abnormal hair growth and distribution.
PCOS and Weight ? What is the connection between the two ?
Dietitian Eti Speaks :PCOS makes it more difficult for the body to use the hormone insulin, which normally helps convert sugars and starches from foods into energy. This condition is called insulin resistance which can cause insulin and sugar / glucose to build up in the bloodstream. High insulin levels increase the production of male hormones called androgens. High androgen levels lead to symptoms such as body hair growth, acne, irregular periods — and weight gain. Because the weight gain is triggered by male hormones, it is typically in the abdomen.

Does Excess weight and disturbed lifestyle lead to issues like PCOS in females?
Dietitian Eti Speaks : Yes our disturbed lifestyle and food choices play major impact on our health and trigger hormonal imbalance and PCOS .Maintaining weight in a normal range helps in normal functioning of Ovaries and result in normal hormonal functioning . With increased weight , there is decrease of insulin sensitivity and trigger production of male hormones in body . thereby resulting in Acne and facial hair .
What is the Diet for a female with PCOS problem ?Is there any specific Diet ?
Dietitian Eti Speaks :Diet in general should typically be high in fiber which means whole grains , vegetables , whole pulses and fruits . This prevents insulin resistance by slow and steady digestion . But just like 1 size does not fit all , similarly Diet Plan needs to be individualized according to the progression of the disease . For example in some females it’s just beginning of the symptoms while in some it has complicated enough to an extent of acne and fat depositions in lower parts of the body .
